Object Name:
Wages Records
Description:
Jubilee Hotel wages sheet.
This 4-page segment has two pages recording the wages for Ina Holman, housemaid waitress, and two for Jean Maddock, cook.
Tax paid is shown by coloured yellow and green stamps on the right hand side of each page. These taxes were a levy on all wages to provide relief to unemployed people during the Depression. This was commonly known as the 'wage tax', at the rate of three pence per pound (3/240) at the time.
The yellow stamp is threepence (3d) and the green is five pence (5d). The stamps were stuck on the page next to the entry they referred to and were 'cancelled' by the employee signing, initialling and/or dating them.
See OHJ vol42 p26
