Description:
Rangiuru House, Otaki.
Otaki beach began to develop as a summer holiday destination in the late 1880s. Tudor Atkinson, a local solicitor and land developer, was early to see the possibilities of the beach for holiday visitors, in the area he named Rangiuru-by-the-Sea. He set up a guesthouse, Rangiuru House, moving a hotel from Manakau.

Rangiuru House was totally destroyed by fire in March 1906, but a new 11 room hotel, which took the same name, continued to provide accommodation for visitors into the 1920s.
