Dr JM Mason.

He came to New Zealand from Scotland in 1895 and set up in general practice in Otaki. He helped set up the Otaki Cottage Hospital and was its first superintendent. He was appointed Chief Health Officer in the Department of Health from 1 December 1900, and at this time he left Otaki.

He was particularly interested in Maori health and in the treatment of tuberculosis. He had the first TB sanatorium, Te Waikato, opened near Cambridge in 1902, and the second on was at Otaki, 1907.
