Otaki has produced more than its fair share of great musicians and bands. There have been
marae and church-based choirs, brass bands, jazz bands, rock 'n roll bands, and of course famous individuals
such as Inia Te Wiata.
Over the years dances have been held at the Town Hall (which was located opposite the Raukawa Marae), Bright's
Theatre (now replaced by the Civic) and the Memorial Hall. Local musicians played for these dances and others
throughout the district.
At home, family and whanau would gather to sing together accompanied by a piano, guitar or other musical
instruments.
